RECENT ONSET TYPE 1 DIABETES AGE 18 AND OLDER WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF DIAGNOSIS. TCELL ASSAY STUDY
Study Name: TCell Assays in Type 1 Diabetes

Study Sponsors:
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Principal Investigator:
Stephen E. Gitelman, M.D., Director of the Pediatric Diabetes Program at UCSF and Amy Putnam, Senior Research Associate.

Who can sign up for this study?
People who were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the last 12 months

What is this study about?
UCSF is conducting this study to learn more about how the immune system works in patients with Type 1 Diabetes. We will perform several types of blood tests to look at a specific part of the immune system, the “T Cell part”. In patients with diabetes, TCells have been activated to attack the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The study doctors want to find out more about why these normally helpful cells are acting destructively in patients with type 1 diabetes. To do so, they will look at the genes in the TCells to see if they can figure out why they are acting so differently.

What will happen in this study?
You will come to UCSF and approximately 110 ml (7 tablespoons) of blood will then be taken from a vein in your arm.

Why volunteer for this study?
We hope that information gained from this study will help researchers learn more about type 1 diabetes.
You will be contributing to diabetes research.

Reimbursement
Volunteers will be paid $50 for participating in the study.
