NEW ONSET OF TYPE DIABETES: AGE 8 TO 35 YEARS WITHIN 1 YEAR OF DIAGNOSIS (T CELL VALIDATION STUDY)

Stephen E. Gitelman, M.D., Principal Investigator

In this study, we wish to compare 4 different laboratory tests which examine T cells. T cells destroy the insulin making cells in the pancreas, and this is what leads to the development of type 1 diabetes. This study is being done to improve our understanding of how diabetes occurs. For this study, we are looking for both people with type 1 diabetes and those without diabetes.

What is involved?
• People without diabetes will first need to do a “mouth swab” test to see if they have certain genes. This involves gently rubbing the inside of the cheek with a sterile swab to collect genetic material (DNA) that can be tested. Those with the certain genes are eligible to continue in the study.
• People with type 1 diabetes will not need to do the mouth swab test.
• If you are eligible and choose to participate: ° You will have 2 visits to a clinic at UCSF for a blood draw of 8 to 10 tablespoons of blood each time ° The visits will occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays only ° You may be asked to fast (not eat anything) for at least 10 hours before the visit (however, drinking water is encouraged). For this reason, the study visits should be in the morning between 8 am and 10 am. ° Visits must be 2-28 days apart

Who is eligible? You are eligible if you
• Are between 8-35 years old • Weigh at least 88 pounds
• Do not have a major illness or take steroids
• Are not pregnant or lactating In addition, to be eligible:
° People with diabetes must be within 1 year of diagnosis.
° People without diabetes must not have a close relative with type 1 diabetes.

Payment for Participation:
Participants will receive $50.00 for each blood draw, plus a 1-hour parking voucher for each study visit.
