| | Diabetes Center scientists receive honors of a lifetime! Diabetes Center scientists Dr. John Baxter, Dr. Cynthia Kenyon and Dr. Arthur Weiss have received one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an American scientist, election to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). They received this honor "in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research." The three now join the ranks of former NAS members such as scientific luminaries Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein. The National Academy of Sciences was founded in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln, to provide guidance on scientific policy matters. The Academy acts as an official adviser to the federal government in any matter of science or technology. The National Academies' service to government has become so essential that Congress and the White House have issued legislation and executive orders over the years that reaffirm their unique role. The election of Drs. Kenyon, Baxter and Weiss has confirmed what we at the Diabetes Center have always known - they are among the best, brightest and most committed researchers our country has to offer, and we are honored to have them as colleagues.
